Meet at Nakiwogo
We meet you at Nakiwogo landing site in Entebbe. If you're staying nearby we can advise on the easiest way to reach us.

Cross to Mabamba Bay
A short boat ride takes you across the bay to the Mabamba wetland, one of Uganda's most important birding sites.

Into the papyrus channels
Your guide poles a quiet wooden canoe through narrow channels lined with papyrus and water lilies, listening and scanning for the shoebill.

Time with the shoebill
When we find one we hold position quietly so you can watch and photograph this prehistoric-looking bird at close range.

More wildlife on the way back
African jacanas, malachite kingfishers, herons, papyrus gonoleks, otters and monitor lizards are all regulars on the return trip.
Best time to go
Early morning is best — the birds are most active and the water is calm. We start at sunrise whenever possible, and late-afternoon trips are also good. The shoebill is resident year round, so there is no bad season, though the dry months bring easier walking and calmer water.

- Sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen
- Light rain jacket — the weather can turn quickly
- Drinking water and a small snack
- Insect repellent
